Welcome to the South Parish Historical Society

The South Parish Historical Society are sad to announce the unexpected death in Cork University Hospital on March 23rd, 2020 of our Secretary and Historian Ronnie Herlihy.

Originally from Cove Street, Ronnie had an encylopedic knowledge of local history especially his beloved South Parish.
All his talks were hugely popular and informative and will be missed by his many admirers.
Since the launch of his book “Among the Stones “ A History of St. Joseph’s Cemetery, his Historical summer walking tours of the Cemetery were a tremendous success.
In recent times his Historical walking tour of Douglas Street in conjunction with the Douglas Street Business Association’s Autumn Festival was also very successful.
He was a true gentleman and scholar and will be sadly missed by everyone.
The Committee, Members and Friends of the South Parish Historical Society offer their deepest and sincere sympathy and condolences to his wife Anne, children Ciara and Daniel and his extended family and friends at this sad time.
May he Rest In Peace.

We hope you enjoy discovering the interesting history behind many of the buildings and historical figures associated with the parish, and also enjoy viewing the numerous old photos taken in the parish down through the decades.

Our public lectures are held in St. John’s College, Sawmill Street, Cork on the 1st Wednesday of the following months, October and November 2019, and February, March and April 2020, at 7.30 pm. For details, see the list of Upcoming Events.
